Chapter 2—
There is a Dragon
It was in the heat of the summers day Janet was resting in the shade of the front porch, her mother and father we off selling their baskets to the tourist that littered the beach and brother was playing near the road that ran past their home.
Janet was admiring the dragon picture on the empty dragon tea box and swung on the porch swing, looking up she saw the rag mans cart heading towards where her brother was playing but he was safely out of the way. Janet looked into the dragon box at her favorite shells the ones she had kept for her collection shells that came from far away seas, lands of her dreams places she wanted to visit.

When Janet’s mind awoke from her thoughts she looked up to where her brother was playing but ken could not be found she called and called and he did not answer. He was gone and all that was happening was the hummingbird was excitingly darting to her and to the road and back again. Janet grew confused with her anxiety she went thru the house and the back yard and the humming bird darted to the road and back to Janet over and over. Than sadness came over her where is the Rag (Junk) Man and his cart he is gone as well, the Junk man stole her brother. What would her parents say she was in charge and she let the junk man steal ken. Her brother is certainly not junk she loves him, he is her best friend, tears filled her sobbing face and the humming bird flew around her head with
Looping circles.

What was it the old woman said Janet thought, as she looked at the hummingbird “hummingbird to dragon” is what the old woman said and Janet called out ‘hummingbird to dragon” loud and clear between her sobs. All of a sudden there was a pop like one of the firecrackers she had lit fir her brother on holiday. Looking at the humming bird change into a majestic dinosaur just like the one on her dragon tea box startled her and than with a nod the pony size creature turned and disappeared down the road.
"A dragon and it was right in front of me and now it’s gone I have lost the dragon and my brother all in such a small time. I have always wanted a dragon but I want my brother more" Janet started sobbing her tear drops were all used up so all she had left was the sobs that crinkled her tear stained face.

Janet sat on the path where it toughed the road and looked towards where the dragon had flown she had never felt as bad in her whole life she had lost both her brother and the dragon. How sad her parents would be ken was gone and they would never believe her about the dragon she felt so alone and ashamed and even her sobs were unable to start up again.

Soon there was a whooshing noise that started to rumble from where the distant road disappeared over the hill. The noise grew louder and louder until a speck appeared a speck that grew into a dot and the dot grew larger and larger as it headed toward Janet.
She did not know what to do should she hide or run but she could not move her feet they were stuck and her eyes became fixed upon the growing thing that flew towards her. Flew she thought it has wings and as it grew closer and closer she could see it was the dragon and their was something grasped in its claws something that looked like a fluttering clump of rags.

Soon she could see it was her dragon and the clump of rags had arms and legs dangling in the wind. “Wow” she heard her herself say as she heard in the distant “Janet, Janet its me Its me” a voice called from the growing bundle of rags and brother. “Ken” she called
“you are safe”” yes” he yelled as he hung from the dragons claws by his shorts “the dragon saved me”. The dragon dropped Ken in front of Janet and the soft bundle of rags that surrounded him also protected him as he bounced he was safe and sound and without one scratch. They started to hug and hug and looked at the dragon who seem so tired sitting in the middle of the road. Janet looked to the dragon and said “dragon to hummingbird” just as the old women had told her and with a pop he change back to a hummingbird and fluttered off to gather a meal from the syrup filled flower blossoms.

Mother and father will never believe this they both said at the same time as they gathered
the assortment of rags scattered when the dragon dropped Ken. They ran back to the porch arms filled with overflowing colorful cloth and off to the big garbage can that was on the side of the house. Than to the well they ran where they washed off their faces so mother and father would not be distracted by unkempt messy tear stained smudges. Cleaned off they went to the front porch and fell asleep on the fluffy swing cushions.
Mother and father came home to find Janet and Ken napping on the porch they let them sleep while they made dinner. When Janet and ken were awoken by the smell of the sizzling dinner it was starting to get dark out, they quietly ate their dinner without saying anything about what had happened to them during the day. After they ate the went to bed
their last words were “Janet do you know the dragons name” ken sleepily said as his eyes and brain shut down for the night. Janet’s mind was jumbled with the excitement and disbelief of what happened during the day but her body was tired and heavy with the need to rest and before long she to fell asleep.

Mother looked to father “they must have had an exciting day it just plain tired the children out.” “Yes” father agreed” we will have to ask them tomorrow.”
